How Are HSAW Pipes Manufactured?

HSAW (Helical Submerged Arc Welded) pipes, also known as spiral welded pipes or SSAW pipes, are manufactured through a continuous spiral forming and welding process using hot-rolled steel coil as the raw material. HSAW pipes are the standard choice for large-diameter water transmission mains, cross-country pipelines, and industrial piping systems.

The HSAW Manufacturing Process

• Hot-rolled steel coil (HR coil) is fed into the pipe mill from a coil decoiler
• The strip edges are cleaned, leveled and inspected before forming
• The strip is formed helically (spirally) using a forming cage and rollers
• The helical seam is continuously welded using Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) — both inside and outside
• Pipes are cut to specified length by a flying saw while the mill runs continuously
• Each pipe is hydrostatically tested, dimensionally inspected, and NDT tested
