What is a Pump House?

A pump house (also called a pump station or pumping station) is a civil structure purpose-built to house water pumping machinery and associated equipment. In water supply systems, pump houses are the mechanical heart of the distribution network — they provide the energy needed to lift and pressurize water for transmission across long distances and varying elevations.

Key Components of a Pump House

• Civil structure: RCC or masonry building with machine foundations
• Pumping units: Submersible pumps, centrifugal pumps or vertical turbine pumps
• Suction piping: Pipes from sump or wet well to pump inlet
• Delivery piping: High-pressure pipes from pump outlet to rising main
• Valves: NRV, gate valve, butterfly valve, pressure reducing valves
• Electrical panel: MCC (Motor Control Centre) and power supply systems
